In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the theme of guilt and conscience is one of many explored throughout the play. Macbeth, is a well respected Scottish noble who in the beginning of the play is a man everyone looks up to; however as the play progresses he makes a number of bad decisions.Lady Macbeth’s guilt is what shows that she’s partly responsible for the murder of Duncan. In the beginning Lady Macbeth is a supportive and loving wife, who gets along well with her husband. When Macbeth tells her about the witches’ prophecy of him being king, she is happy for him.Guilt is a key theme in Macbeth and can be seen as largely responsible for Macbeth’s tyrannous rule and his wife’s demise and death. Guilt can be seen through the pattern of speech in the play, and its progression as the guilt consumes Lady Macbeth’s sanity and mental wellbeing.
Macbeth’s vision of the ghost reveals his guilt over ordering the murder of Banquo and his young son. His sense of guilt is so powerful that he loses his sense of reality and cannot be sure whether he is having a vision or not.
